Tiivistelmä

The Russian criminal procedure strives to ensure the adversarial nature

of judicial proceedings. This implies a legal system which provides equal procedural opportunities for the defense and the prosecution. The State guarantees that the accused is granted legal aid by an advocate. If the accused faces financial difficulties, he or she is provided with a state advocate (an advocate paid by the State). However, in practice the role of advocates (both state and private) in the Russian criminal proceedings is very often reduced to a formal presence. There are several reasons for this situation.
