Tiivistelmä

This article is based on a speech held at the seminar "The Legacy of the Åland Islands Solution" on 5 April 2022 in the Hague. This article discusses the special status of Åland Islands and its sustainability from a legal perspective. The author emphasizes that the solution for Åland Islands is deeply rooted in legal agreements, and the question is whether they will endure over time.

The demilitarization and neutrality of Åland Islands are based on four fundamental agreements but the author points out that the Åland Islands solution is based on much more than just these agreements. The solution would not have been possible without the Åland Islands Convention between Sweden and Finland, which guarantees autonomy and self-determination. This article also states that the special status of Åland Islands is recognized in the context of the EU through Finland's accession treaty and the Åland Protocol. This solution supports Åland Islands' economic independence, preservation of its cultural character, and its special legal status.

Furthermore, this article emphasizes the broader significance of the Åland Islands solution in the legal systems and regional cooperation of the Baltic Sea area. Maritime boundaries, transit rights, and the demilitarization of the region are key factors in maintaining stability in the area.
