Tiivistelmä

The article provides an overview of the current state of affairs with respect to national climate legislation in the Netherlands. The article focuses on mitigation, leaving adaptation outside. However, much attention in the Netherlands goes to adaptation – how the country can be protected against negative climate effects, in particular flooding. The Dutch Scientific Council for Government Policy

in 2006 quite strikingly advised the national government to pay substantially more attention to adaptation in the Netherlands instead of conducting mitigation efforts. With regard to mitigation, the current Dutch government only wants to stick to the ambition of the EU mitigation policy, and, hence, does not want to consider more ambitious mitigation policies. This means that the ambition of Dutch climate mitigation law is determined by the European ambition.
