Tiivistelmä

For over 30 years, there has been a debate on the consequences of ever increasing storage of information. This issue was discussed not only in legal and sociology research, but as well in pop culture. The focus has shifted now to the question how to add a temporal aspect to digital memory.

In “Delete: The Virtue of Forgetting in the Digital Age” (Princeton University Press 2009), Viktor Mayer-Schönberger explains the paradigm shift from the default of forgetting to the default of storing everything. This article has gained new relevance, since the right to be forgotten has been made one of four principles of the reform of the General Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC. In this review are summarized and evaluated Mayer-Schönberger’s thoughts on the problem of digital remembering and the solutions he offers. Some additional remarks on the topic are made by the writer.
