Access to justice – a concept with many meanings

The role, status and capacity of courts in guaranteeing citizens´ access to justice will be discussed in the article. Many other – public and private – institutions resolving disputes and producing legal services play an important role in the access to justice approach, too. Thus, the discussion will also cover alternatives to court litigation. The increasing role of alternative means of dispute resolution (ADR) at

least partly reflects the problems and low standard of court services and court proceedings. At the same time, the ADR system reflects ideas of the so-called access to justice movement having its beginning in the 1960s. Hence, the main features and results of the movement will be discussed, as well. (Edilex-toimitus)
