Licensing of on-demand music streaming services in Finland and the U.S.

The Internet brought the music industry to a new level, and opened the door for many digital services to flourish and develop new business models. It has enabled consumers to access music easily, rapidly and at a lower cost. This article looks at licensing of music to digital services in Finland and the U.S., focusing on on-demand music streaming services such as Spotify. The author looks at the relevant rights holders and their implicated exclusive rights, and the licensing procedure. She also presents some recent and upcoming developments on the market that are of relevance to the subject area in question, such as the copyright reform in the U.S. and the proposal for a new directive in the EU.
